[Jack of course is hard-wired to anticipate the worst, and it’s difficult to tamp down his own paranoia in a situation like this. He’s already gone over all the possibilities in his head, already knows that everything is a dead end and that there’s nothing they’ll be able to do. That’s what makes it hurt.

What’s the most interesting here is Snake’s reaction. Jack knew they were close, of course, but this is betraying something else—a conclusion he doesn’t want to jump to, as it seems far too personal.

The hand on Snake’s shoulder is quickly getting awkward, but it seems just as inappropriate to remove it, especially since Snake is making no moves to. It makes him wish he were better at comfort—or, at the very least, making and keeping promises.

I’ll do whatever it takes.

[He can’t be sure, of course he can’t, but if there’s one thing he still has, it’s dogged determination. Jack may have given up on himself a long time ago, but he’s still devoted to his people. If Angela is lost somewhere, then Jack won’t rest until he’s certain she’s safe, even if all that means is confirming she’s home.]

I know you don’t know me very well-- -- [And, therefore, has no real idea what Jack is capable of when he really puts his mind to it,] --so I ain't sure what it means to you, but I can tell you that much.
