CHARACTER NAME: Jack Morrison | Soldier: 76
AGE: Unstated, presumably mid-late 50s.
CANON: Overwatch
CANON POINT: Post-“Valkyrie”, after shaking down an ex-coworker for medical supplies, affirming his rejection of the ongoing recall of Overwatch agents, and departing Egypt in pursuit of Reaper.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY:
In the near future, the AI systems that the world has come to depend on begin a mass uprising, churning out endless hordes of combat units that wage war on humanity. A young Jack Morrison joins the military specifically to combat this “Omnic Crisis”. The fight becomes increasingly desperate, and the US government makes the controversial decision to engineer super soldiers. Jack, noted for his work ethic and bravery, is tapped for this highly-classified “soldier enhancement program” and, after being genetically augmented, sets off to combat the global threat. As it becomes clear that the Crisis will not be stopped via traditional methods, the United Nations pieces together an international task force called Overwatch to turn the tides. Under the command of fellow SEP graduate (and best friend) Gabriel Reyes, Jack and the other founding members of the strike team carry out a series of highly technical and dangerous missions to disable Omnic command, which effectively ends the conflict. In the aftermath, Overwatch is legitimized and expanded. Jack, having exhibited a talent for leadership, becomes Strike-Commander and Reyes is given command of classified covert ops, called Blackwatch (yikes).

Jack leads Overwatch for twenty years, and during his tenure the organization rebuilds in the wake of a near-apocalypse, renders humanitarian aid, champions international peace, and fosters groundbreaking developments in science, medicine, and technology. Eventually, however, it falls victim to shifting global politics, bureaucratic bloating, and rapidly declining public opinion. Overwatch becomes the subject of great controversy involving the public exposure of Blackwatch, a direct result of Jack allowing Gabriel to operate without meaningful oversight (double yikes). Collapsing beneath compounding scandals, the assassinations of prominent agents (including second-in-command Ana Amari), terrorist attacks, and internal strife, Overwatch is dismantled in a series of inquiries after an explosion at its Swiss headquarters. Though the public is assured it’s an accident, the reality is that Gabriel leads a mutiny, destroying the compound and killing both himself and Jack in the process. Though it seems that Gabriel really did attempt a murder (albeit for unknown reasons), Jack survives and realizes the truth of the attack runs deeper, brought on by enemies both within and without.

Six years later, ex-agents defy UN mandate and initiate a recall of operatives, deciding that Overwatch is still needed in the face of rising global tensions between humans and Omnics. Jack pointedly ignores this and re-emerges as the vigilante Soldier: 76, making indiscriminate enemies of governments, private corporations, and anyone who may have played a part in the attack on headquarters. He begins to uncover a vast global conspiracy that both brought down Overwatch and aims to re-start the war he ended, and in unraveling these threads reunites with Ana, who is also not dead. Together, they set off in pursuit of Gabriel (ALSO not dead, now acting as the terrorist Reaper) and the truth behind Overwatch’s downfall.

PERSONALITY:
Jack was, at one point, charismatic and celebrated, a renowned and well-liked military commander noted for his moral fiber and unwavering devotion to a better world. Though we’re given only glimpses of the man he used to be, it’s clear that he was competent and compassionate, a thoughtful and measured leader who never lost sight of his responsibility to the world at large.

It’s difficult, however, to live on a pedestal. Already duty-bound by nature, Jack pursues Overwatch’s mission at the expense of almost everything else, including, in one instance, a nation’s sovereignty. Where most of his colleagues have partners and children, Jack ends a serious relationship because he knows the nature of his position means he won’t be able to give it the attention it deserves. His idealism becomes a hinderance, and he continually ignores his own needs in increasingly desperate efforts to keep Overwatch alive. He physically survives the attack on headquarters, but the same cannot be said for his mental state.

76 firmly believes that the man he used to be is dead, and with him, everything he worked for. Disillusioned and bitter, he actively tries to distance himself from the inspirational, heroic figure that he once was, writing off his prior convictions as unrealistic, naive, and ultimately futile. The same drive that helped him achieve so much in his heyday has turned into single-minded obsession, and no price is too high to pay for the answers he wants. Where Jack was fully committed to a grand vision of a better world, 76 is shellshocked, paranoid, and burned by his failure. A stubborn streak has become self-destructive obstinance, and he barrels into conflict with no sense of self-preservation, exhibiting a pathological fixation on uncovering the truth of how things went so wrong—or maybe just exacting retribution for it.

His general demeanor is gruff, blunt, and sardonic. No longer one to offer praise or encouragement, 76 is volatile and impatient, acutely aware of his age and the fact that he’s running on borrowed time. Despite this, he’s known to incapacitate rather than kill, and in the company of old friends he shows a more good-natured side, exhibiting a sense of humor and concern for his allies, parts of his old self that he seems unable to shake. Still, 76 has lost almost everything, knows the price of war intimately, and has watched the world and his living friends give up on the cause for which he sacrificed personal happiness. Underneath his burning desire for vengeance is someone who has little else to strive for. Fighting is what he knows, and the only thing he feels he can do. Once he catches up to the ghosts he’s chasing, he’ll serve no further purpose, so he needs to make every battle count.

SUITABILITY:
Jack spent his formative years fighting for humanity’s survival, and as an adult moves from one conflict to the next, actively participating in field missions and strike team operations until his “death” in his late 40s, where he proceeds to live his best wanted fugitive/vigilante life. He’s no stranger to dire situations, limited resources, and spartan accommodations, to say nothing of operating as part of a military outfit, living and working in a dangerous and occasionally violent environment.

With regards to character growth in the setting, 76 has spent most of his life in a leadership position working towards literal world peace—something that is not so easily forgotten. In order to contribute to a cooperative survival situation, 76 will need to reconcile that core of himself with his new jaded outlook, while simultaneously re-learning how to function as part of a team.

ABILITIES/SKILLS:
● Enhancements - 76 was genetically augmented in his late teens/early twenties as part of an experimental US government “soldier enhancement program”. As a result, he has greatly increased strength, speed, agility, stamina, and durability. He’s able to perform superhuman physical feats and maintains a kind of homeostasis that helps him adapt quickly to harsh environments. He can take physical punishment beyond what can be withstood by a normal human, and bounces back from injury faster with an accelerated healing factor. However, his enhancements have been shown to falter under the influence of a debilitating biological agent, and generally speaking it’s implied that he’s become less able with age.
● Training and Combat - Advanced military, arms, and special/covert ops training. 76 has experience with a wide range of martial arts styles and weaponry, making him an extremely skilled hand-to-hand combatant. In combination with his genetically enhanced physiology, this makes him a force to be reckoned with in a one-on-one (or five-on-one) fight. He’s described in-universe by people who got on the wrong end of his fists and gun as “[…] a professional. Confident. Surgical”. His weapon of choice is an assault rifle tailored to graduates of the SEP, and he’s a practiced marksman even without his auto-targeting tactical visor.
● Tactics - 76 helped end the robot uprising by carrying out a series of highly technical and very dangerous asymmetrical military operations. In the ensuing decades, he acted both on and off the field to personally oversee strike team infiltrations, hostage extractions, and humanitarian missions. He also seems to be fairly well-read, with a specific interest in military history.
● Diplomacy?? 76 was the public face of an international peacekeeping organization for twenty years. Underneath all his baggage is an extremely capable leader with a a talent for motivating and unifying conflicting personalities into a cohesive team. Though he has an extreme lack of interest in doing the ‘commander’ thing again, 76 knows a thing or two about bureaucracy, politics, and diplomacy (or at least public relations). He’s just got to work through some of his own issues, first.

INVENTORY:
● Body armor (worn underneath extremely cool jacket).
● An auto-targeting tactical visor, which also acts as a movement-detecting environmental scanner.
● A heavy pulse rifle, his primary weapon, capable of both standard fire and a trio of long-range rockets, the latter of which requires a cooldown period. It will come with one standard magazine (30 rounds, no rockets).
Biotic fields, short-term nanotech healing devices. He carries six of these visibly on his person, and they have one-use functionality, so please feel free to restrict the number he’s allowed as you see fit.
● A stack of old photographs.

Samples;

SAMPLE ONE: How he communicates
SAMPLE TWO: How he thinks
Speaking to a fellow soldier he considers a friend, 76 rationalizes his decision to conceal his identity from a group of Overwatch agents, even after he’s been forced to come clean.
SAMPLE THREE: How he handles conflicts
Jack encounters a version of Gabriel Reyes from before the fall of Overwatch, and decides the best way to get answers is to beat him up in an alleyway.
