Were you ever afraid that someone would discover who you were?
( in all of those years that he was 'dead'. it's a lead in to angela's real question, and a wish to know something more about all of those years. it's a risky conversation for being in public, the two walking through a parisian street, but it seemed that everywhere could be if they could get to you as easily as they had gotten to xici )
[Despite his presumed death and all of the tactical gear he wore to prevent the discovery of his identity, Jack had, at one point, one of the most famous faces in the world. It's difficult to shake the fear that he might be recognized. Even walking through the streets of Paris hundreds of years before his own birth, he can't help but feel exposed without his mask and visor. Having Angela walking with him helps, though he doesn't think he'll ever stop being at least a little jumpy.]
It happened, remember? That Atlas News piece.
[Luckily, it had mostly been dismissed as ridiculous, but for a while there Jack had been holding his breath.]
[ After Chiron's post, of course she couldn't help checking to see if 76 had similar toys in his room. Which is why she's currently perched on his bed, reenacting pretend fights with the fat green soldiers. ]
... Well, it'd be cooler if they were knights, though. [ So, naturally, she starts making sword and horse noises as they clash. ]
[By now, 76 knows that Saber is not kept out of his room by conventional means. Trying to keep her out or emphasize the concept of personal space just seems to make her more interested in getting into his stuff, so the best course of action seems to be not picking fights, and hoping she'll get bored and stop if he isn't blowing a gasket about it.
Doesn't make it any less infuriating when he enters his quarters to find her on the bed.]
Genji fully intends to participate in the arena fights, hopeful that his luck and skill will serve him better here than it did in the arcade. He's well aware of the greater risks involved, but if COST is going to make any sort of impact here, then they have to perform. He'd managed to make it through an Aranean party without anything horrific happening, so he's feeling a little better going into this.
That being said, he wants to observe some of the matches before he puts his name on the waiting list, and so he searches for a place in the stands to settle and watch. As he's doing so, he spots a familiar someone in the crowd, easily picked out with that head of shock-white hair. ]
Comm - [ Wait, no. ] Jack!
[ Genji maneuvers his way through the alien crowd until he's at Jack's side, and waves briefly at him in greeting. ] You've come to take a look as well?
[Jack is going to end up in the arenas eventually—he’s got no real expectations about winning or losing, and though the thought of dying and being resurrected by COST’s technology makes him uneasy, he imagines it’s just going to be like ripping off a bandaid.
Possibly with more being consumed. He'll cross that bridge when he gets there. For now, he almost flinches at the sound of his name, and he has to consider himself lucky that it's common enough that he can get way with people using it here.
Not that he's particularly happy about it. He tries to pull Genji somewhere out of the way.]
( how many times was this now? angela is at least glad that he's coming to her, rather than letting any bruises or breaks remain or him 'dealing' with it himself.
she's glad that he's here, even if the expression that she gives him when he comes towards her doesn't say as much. her hands are reaching for him before angela says anything, though the results of this fight look worse than the previous ones. jack is capable but he's fighting something completely different. something with different rules )
[Jack knows he's pressing his luck--he risks his life with every entry into the arena, but this is the mission and fighting is what he knows. Angela's here to patch him up as always, though it's not without some guilt on his part.]
It's the mission, Angela.
[What he doesn't say is that fighting is the only thing he feels he can do. He's aware it isn't a real answer, and his eyes are a little downcast as he lets her look him over.]
On the tragic event of your loss. My heart grieve to see you both cut down. Why, I nearly ripped the Lady Bes apart. Thank the Watcher she was not of my people. I would have had to cut her down, to think anyone else could have had a bite of you before your Ladies or myself would have. I assume you both plan your revenge upon the Regency for this humilating loss.
You must tell me how you mean to do it, join me, I am to have my portait painted this year and will need good and hearty company to cheer me, for my heart has been broken after your deaths. I do not often condone those who shamefully come back to life. But such specimens as you being left would offend me more deeply. Do not deny me looking upon your face.
From Her High Majesty, Queen Thsh

( even then angela had held her breath, hoping that the possibility of jack being alive was true, but she'd been proven wrong then. so she'd thought )
But you still continued. They only knew the number.
