[Despite Blackwatch's efforts to clean up the American Southwest, the politics of the world tend to be a pendulum--no one knows that better than Jack Morrison. The story of the rise and fall and rise of the Deadlock Gang is mirrored all over the world, as the push and pull of international crime swings back and forth. Overwatch was able to achieve some sort of peace for a long time, but now that it's over, less-than-savory organizations are creeping back to the forefront—only this time, there's nothing standing in their way.
Helix does an all right job of maintaining the old Watchpoints, 76 thinks, but they're a private security company, and he doesn't necessarily trust their ulterior motives. Ultimately, he’s not surprised that Deadlock managed to retake the region, even after Overwatch removed McCree from the equation. It's been quite a few years, which is plenty of time for a notorious gang to get back on its feet, especially in the last few years, with the void left by Overwatch's shutdown.
So 76 knows, perhaps more intimately than most, that he's walking into a bad situation.
Something like that has never stopped him before. It's quicker to cross through New Mexico on his way to Dorado from Grand Mesa, and he's better equipped than the past few weeks, now that he has a pulse rifle again. He decides to take his chances, first stowing away on trains and then making his way further and further south on foot. Border's only a few days away, but he has to go slow so as not to bring attention to himself. Easier said than done when the landscape is so flat, but he makes do. Passing through a quiet town at night gives him some cover, though he doesn't doubt that Deadlock...and maybe others...has eyes on him by now.
Suffice to say, he's fully expecting to be jumped on his way through this territory--especially at night, especially in a quiet desert town like this. His scanner picks up a few shapes, likely people in the buildings or milling around outside, and he takes care to avoid them accordingly. He knows he shouldn't linger, but when he rounds a corner and finds what's clearly some kind of a shipment with the logo of a military contractor on the side, his curiosity gets the better of him.
He'll just take a quick look, to make sure it isn't the wrong things in the wrong hands.--it'll only take a minute, and then he'll be gone.]

NAME: Jack Morrison | Soldier: 76
CANON: Overwatch
CANON POINT: After leaving Egypt with Ana Amari, current with all “present-day” lore as of Bastet.
AGE: Unknown, presumably mid-late 50s.
BACKGROUND: [Here!]
Additional References for Bonus Content: [The Omnic Crisis] [Overwatch (organization)] [blog post] [origin story]
PERSONALITY:
Jack Morrison was, at one point, charismatic and celebrated, a renowned and well-liked military commander noted for his moral fiber and uncanny talent for unifying conflicting personalities into a cohesive fighting force. Over the course of two decades, he uses his position to expand Overwatch beyond its original military purpose, rebuilding in the wake of a nearly apocalyptic crisis, championing international peace, and fostering groundbreaking developments in science and technology. During this time, he's widely regarded as someone the whole world could really and truly call a hero—which they did. Though we’re given only brief glimpses of the man he used to be, it’s clear that he was competent, compassionate, and thoroughly invested in his cause, never losing sight of the faith placed in him by the world at large.
It’s difficult, however, to live on a pedestal. Already duty-bound and self-sacrificing by nature, Jack pursues Overwatch’s mission at the expense of almost everything else, including, in one instance, a nation’s sovereignty. Where most of his colleagues have spouses (ex- or otherwise) and children, Jack ends a serious relationship because he knows the nature of his position means he won’t be able to give it the attention it deserves. His idealism becomes a hinderance, and he continually ignores his own wants and needs in increasingly futile efforts to keep Overwatch alive. Collapsing beneath scandal and continued onslaughts from terrorist cells, the organization is put to rest after an apparent attack on its Swiss headquarters where Jack is presumed killed in the blast.
He physically survives, but the same cannot be said for his mental state. His eulogy praised the fact that he “gave everything he was to Overwatch”—but perhaps he gave a bit too much. With all he built laid to ruin, what could possibly be left?
Christened Soldier: 76 by the media, the vigilante that crawls out of Overwatch’s rubble firmly believes that the man he used to be is dead, and with him, everything he worked for. In fact, 76 doubts it was worth working for in the first place, and thinks he wasted his time. Disillusioned, bitter, and overly-cynical, he actively tries to distance himself from the inspirational, heroic figure that he once was, writing off his prior convictions as unrealistic and painfully naive. Few prices are too high to pay for the answers that he wants, and the same drive that helped him achieve so much in his heyday has turned into single-minded, self-destructive obsession. Where Jack was unwaveringly devoted to a grander vision of world peace, 76 is shellshocked, paranoid, burdened by his failure, and fully committed to uncovering the truth of how things went so wrong—or maybe just exacting retribution for it.
His general demeanor is gruff, blunt, and sardonic. Not one to offer praise, encouragement, or words in general, 76 is impatient and terse, acutely aware of his age and a little self-deprecating with regards to it. Still, he’s stubborn, insistent, and a tenacious force to be reckoned with. 76 is exceptionally driven, and has a tendency to barrel headfirst into a fight without much thought (something for which he's criticized).
At this point, he’s a man who has lost almost everything, knows the price of war intimately, and has watched the world and his still living friends give up on the cause for which he sacrificed personal happiness. Underneath his burning desire for vengeance is someone who has nothing else to strive for. Though he's certainly aware he’s past his prime, fighting is what he knows, and the only thing he feels he can do (he is, after all, "just a soldier"). 76 functions with the knowledge that once he catches up to the ghosts he’s chasing, he’ll serve no further purpose. He’s running on borrowed time, and has to make it count.
For all of his ennui, ruthless tendencies, and questionable methodology, however, he can’t quite shake the hero thing. Though he doesn't hesitate to resort to violence, he’s noted to incapacitate rather than kill. Faced with the choice between pursuing weapons traffickers or saving the life of a civilian, he opts for the latter. Though he adamantly insists to the civilian in question that he isn’t a hero and shouldn’t be called one, there’s a part of him still devoted to doing the right thing. How he gets there, however, doesn’t matter anymore. The ends justify the means, after all.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
● Enhancements - 76 was genetically augmented in his late teens/ early twenties as part of an experimental (and controversial!) US government “soldier enhancement program. As a result, he has greatly increased strength, speed, agility, stamina, and durability. He’s able to perform superhuman physical feats and maintains a kind of homeostasis that helps him adapt to harsh environments. He can take physical punishment beyond what can be withstood by a normal human, and bounces back from injury faster with an accelerated healing factor (not Wolverine fast, though—think a few hours). However, his enhancements have been shown to falter under the influence of a debilitating biological agent, and generally speaking it’s implied that he’s become less able with age.INVENTORY:
● Training - Advanced military, arms, and special/covert ops training. This is a dude with extensive tactical knowledge and experience with a wide range of martial arts styles and weaponry, who helped end the robot uprising by carrying out a series of highly technical and very dangerous asymmetrical military operations. His weapon of choice is an assault rifle tailored to graduates of the SEP, and he’s a skilled marksman even without his auto-targeting tactical visor.
● Combat - Extremely skilled hand-to-hand combatant. In combination with his genetically enhanced physiology, this makes him a force to be reckoned with in a one-on-one (or five-on-one) fight. Or any kind of fight. He’s described in-universe by people who got on the wrong end of his fists and gun as “[…] a professional. Confident. Surgical”. He is known to incapacitate rather than kill.
● The clothes on his back, including equipment harnesses, body armor, and extremely cool jacket.MOONBLESSING: Sanguis
● An auto-targeting tactical visor that also acts as an environment scanner. He’s a competent marksman even without it.
● A heavy pulse rifle, his primary weapon, capable of both standard fire and a trio of long-range rockets, the latter of which requires a cooldown period.
● Biotic fields, short-term nanotech healing devices. He carries six of these visibly on his person, implying a limited-use functionality, so please feel free to restrict the number he’s allowed as you see fit.
● A secondary sidearm (it’s just a regular pistol)
● A stack of old photographs, including this one and this one.

History: [Here!]

Three key adjectives: tenacious, disillusioned, self-sacrificing
Influential Events:
● The Omnic Crisis
Somewhere in Indiana, a relatively uneventful middle-American life is upended by the robot apocalypse. Regardless of this unexpected development, a young Jack Morrison rises to the occasion, his innate sense of duty evident in the fact that he joins the US military specifically to combat the Omnic threat. This goes one step further when the government turns to increasingly desperate measures--genetically engineering super soldiers. Jack is recommended to the program for his work ethic, determination, and courage, and despite controversy, ethical quandaries, and potential dangers, Jack willingly becomes an experiment, ready to do what's asked of him even at great personal cost, a testament to his self-sacrificing nature.
Still, even that isn't enough, and the United Nations pieces together an international special ops best-of-the-best team called Overwatch to turn the tides. Again, Jack doesn't hesitate, waging a series of highly technical and very dangerous asymmetrical military operations with the hope of definitively ending the war. It's here that Jack learns the value of a team, and he exhibits an uncanny talent for unifying conflicting personalities into a cohesive fighting force, something that serves him well as a leader and helps Overwatch to surpass expectations.
Much of Jack's experience as a young adult is within the context of a fight for humanity's survival. From the very outset, he believes in something much larger than himself and knows that you cannot succeed without the camaraderie of others.
● Promotion to Strike-Commander
When the strike team ends the Crisis, they usher in a new and uncertain era of peace. Overwatch is given legitimacy, and with it, responsibility, something that Jack takes very seriously. His moral fiber and perseverance in the face of impossible odds makes him an obvious choice to lead a long-term peacekeeping operation, and the UN gives him command.
Charismatic and celebrated, Jack becomes a renowned and well-liked military commander noted for his unwavering devotion to creating a better world. Over the course of two decades, he uses his position to expand Overwatch beyond its original military purpose, rebuilding in the wake of the Crisis, championing international peace, and fostering groundbreaking developments in science and technology. During this time, he's widely regarded as someone the whole world could really and truly call a hero—which they did. Though we’re given only brief glimpses of the man he used to be as Strike-Commander, it’s clear that he is competent, compassionate, and thoroughly invested in both his cause and his people, never losing sight of the gravity of his position and the faith placed in him by the world at large.
● King’s Row Uprising
Still, twenty years is a long tenure, and it’s more than enough time to fall victim to shifting global politics, the ultimate outcome of being placed on a pedestal. Somewhere along the line, Jack stumbles under the weight of international politicking. Enmired in bureaucratic bloating and rapidly falling public opinion, Overwatch becomes the subject of great controversy involving the exposure of a covert ops division and accusations of human rights abuses, a direct result of Jack allowing said division to operate without meaningful oversight, his idealism having become a hinderance.
When a group of Omnic extremists occupies a prominent London neighborhood, and the British Prime Minister rejects Overwatch's assistance, Jack is forced to question the cause to which he devoted his life. As he weighs his ability to end a hostage situation against respecting a nation's sovereignty, it's clear that securing world peace at the expense of his own wants and needs has taken its toll on him. Still, he acts as a thoughtful and measured leader, allowing his subordinates to voice their opinions on the matter and carefully considering the risk of further eroding the world's trust in him.
Ultimately, he intervenes because he has the ability to save lives, which to him means there was never really a choice at all. His penchant for self-sacrifice is evident once more, as he knows the decision does not come without consequence. This time, however, Jack's devotion to Overwatch is a detriment to his own well-being as he gives larger and larger parts of himself to the organization in a desperate and futile effort to keep it alive.
● The Fall of Overwatch
Collapsing beneath scandal and continued onslaughts from terrorist cells, Overwatch is put to rest after an apparent attack on its Swiss headquarters where Jack is supposedly killed in the blast. He physically survives, but the same cannot be said for his mental state. His eulogy praised the fact that he “gave everything he was to Overwatch”—but perhaps he gave a bit too much. With all he built laid to ruin, what could possibly be left?
Christened Soldier: 76 by the media, the vigilante that crawled out of Overwatch’s rubble firmly believes that the man he used to be is dead, and with him, everything he worked for. In fact, 76 doubts it was worth working for in the first place, and thinks he wasted his time. Disillusioned, bitter, and overly-cynical, he actively works to distance himself from the inspirational, heroic figure that he once was, writing off his prior convictions as unrealistic and painfully naive. Few prices are too high to pay for the answers that he wants, and the same drive that helped him achieve so much in his heyday has turned into single-minded, self-destructive obsession. Chosen path: Paladin
3 Abilities:
● Genetic enhancements (CANON): 76 was augmented in his late teens/early twenties, making him stronger, faster, and more durable than an ordinary human—the “perfect soldier”. It's implied that he's become less able with age. This does not, unfortunately, stop him from pushing himself as though he's still in his prime, often to his own detriment. Why this path?: For all of 76’s ennui and questionable methodology, he can’t quite shake the hero thing. Spending more than three decades fighting for peace, justice, and a better world is not easily forgotten, and I enjoy the idea of 76 having to reconcile that core of himself with his new reckless and often violent tendencies. Despite his concentrated efforts to divorce himself from the man he used to be, a part of him is still fully devoted to doing the right thing. Since he’s at an arguably low point, filling the role of a righteous protector once again will force him to confront his own failures, accept them, and eventually realize that despite his past shortcomings, he can continue to be a legitimate force for good. There's more of Jack Morrison left than he'd like to admit, and by choosing this path he’ll have to come to terms with that.

[All in all, things could have gone much worse.
Null Sector was stopped. The hostages are safe and King's Row is liberated. Things are back in the hands of the British government, and their little four-person team has returned to headquarters. They've been debriefed, and the mission was, arguably, a success. Despite that apparent fact, Jack has been fielding phone calls from Petras and the Prime Minister and all manner of people who are now extremely angry with him. He expects to be brought up on charges sooner rather than later, but right now it's late, and the calls have all fallen silent.
Jack is going to take advantage of the precious few hours of peace while he can--there will be meetings and interviews and press conferences in the morning, but for now he has a six pack and he's on his way to Ana's office, because after today they probably deserve a break.
He knows she's up, because the two of them hardly ever sleep, to say nothing of trying to rest after a day like today. Still, he's not rude about it, knocking on her door and waiting for the answer before holding up the beer, shrugging a little.]
Thought we could use this.
[A sort of modest congratulations, maybe, while they have the opportunity. Before all of the nitty-gritty of the mission comes out. Despite what the worlds' governments will say tomorrow, they can't deny that Overwatch saved lives today. That's something to celebrate.]

CANON: Overwatch
CANON POINT: Post-Valkyrie

AFFECTION: you can try. he won't reciprocate and might even respond poorly, depending on what it is, who is doing it, and how they go about it
RELATIONSHIPS: emotionally unavailable, vaguely traumatized, and generally of the belief that he doesn't deserve regular people things like significant others. he's gay but is unlikely to say anything about it unless directly asked. unrequited stuff and all of the awkward that comes with it is totally cool
VIOLENCE: YES but please keep in mind that 76 is a captain america-style super soldier and is very good at punching. yes to minor/major/permanently debilitating injury, as long as we discuss it beforehand
TELEPATHY: unable to detect mental intrusions but won't take kindly to it if he does find out. If you play a telepath or empath/psychic/mind reader and need more information about what you might find in there, just let me know.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION:
76 was genetically augmented in his late teens/early twenties as part of an experimental US government “soldier enhancement program”. As a result, he has greatly increased strength, speed, agility, stamina, and durability. He’s able to perform superhuman physical feats and maintains a kind of homeostasis that helps him adapt quickly to harsh environments. He can take physical punishment beyond what can be withstood by a normal human, and bounces back from injury faster with an accelerated healing factor. However, his enhancements have been shown to falter under the influence of a debilitating biological agent, and generally speaking it’s implied that he’s become less able with age.
Still, he has advanced military, arms, and special/covert ops training, with a wide range of experience in various martial arts styles and weaponry, making him an extremely skilled hand-to-hand combatant. In combination with his genetically enhanced physiology, this makes him a force to be reckoned with in a one-on-one (or five-on-one) fight. He’s described in-universe by people who got on the wrong end of his fists and gun as “[…] a professional. Confident. Surgical”. His weapon of choice is an assault rifle tailored to graduates of the SEP, and he’s a practiced marksman even without his auto-targeting tactical visor.
MENTAL INFORMATION:
War is hell. 76 has PTSD, bad coping mechanisms, and betrayal-related trauma. He's an expert compartmentalizer, but his goal-driven mindset has become self-destructive paranoia and obsession. Tries very, very hard to dissociate from the man he used to be and the ideals he once championed. Fighting is the only thing he feels he can do.

UNWANTED SCENARIOS:
No dub/noncon, but otherwise I'm pretty okay with most things. Just ask if you're unsure!
ADDITIONAL PERMISSIONS:
He punches real hard, so just let me know if you plan on picking a fight with him. If for any reason you'd rather opt out from interacting with him entirely, please let me know on my HMD.
